2. Get the bonnet open
Pop open the bonnet up front and let the steam escape. While opening the lid of the bonnet, make sure to keep your face away. The escaping steam will probably be of much higher temperature than your skin can take and it will be left steam burnt. Stay away as the steam and smoke escape the bonnet.
3. Check the radiator
This might be the most important and difficult task while dealing with a heated car engine. You need to open the radiator to see if it is running low. But do not try opening the radiator lid when the engine is still hot. It takes around 30-45 minutes to cool down. You need to wait out that period, and even flag down another car willing to help if you are alone on the street. If you try to open it before it cools, the inside of the radiator will be too hot for you and you can, once again, be left burning. Be patient.
Once the engine cools down, open the radiator lid. Use gloves or a thick piece of cloth to take the brunt of any leftover steam that might be there. Next, you need to fill it in with water and coolant. If you are not carrying coolant in the trunk, only water can suffice as a temporary solution.
Remember to turn the ignition on before filling the radiator with water. This is important because otherwise your engine might get cracked. Keep the engine running while you pour the coolant in.
